BSc in Financial Mathematics & Economics, MSc in Applied Mathematics by Research, PhD in Applied Mathematics.

Why did you join the team at ApisProtect?

While finishing up my PhD in Applied Mathematics I came across a job posting on the ApisProtect website. I was immediately intrigued about the idea of using data remotely collected from beehives to understand the dynamics of the colonies inside and to improve the outcomes for bees.

A friend who previously worked for ApisProtect had great things to say about the company and recommended applying. I’m glad I took his advice and haven’t looked back since.

What do you enjoy most about your job?

My PhD focused mainly on fundamental mathematical research without immediate real-world applications. I love seeing the conclusions we draw from the data and the insights provided by our machine learning algorithms reflected in what the beekeepers are seeing in their hives.

Why did you specialize in Data Science?

I have a passion for mathematical modelling and statistics. Data science brings these two disciplines together in a powerful way that can be applied to an incredible variety of problems.

What has been the most interesting aspect of your role?

Since I’ve joined ApisProtect I’ve been constantly learning. First and foremost, I’ve been learning about the life cycle of a honey bee, the dynamics of their colonies and the work of a beekeeper by delving deep into ecology and biology journals and having in-depth chats with our CSO Pádraig. The close-knit startup environment has also allowed me to learn more about, and get involved in, other areas of the company including hardware design, market research, grant applications and graphic design.
